New Energy Efficient Lighting - are you being left in the dark?

New Energy Efficient Lighting - are you being left in the dark?
Over the summer we installed new energy efficient lighting, including more movement sensors.  The system is set up so lights switch off when movement cannot be detected.
If you are being left in the dark when you are studying please just move around a little and the sensor SHOULD detect you are there and turn lights back on again.
If you cannot get lights activated without having to leave your seat please let us know.  We may be able to get sensors adjusted to be less of a nuisance.

Smokers shelter

In case you were wondering what it is! Over the last couple of days, despite the weather, builders have been putting up a smokers shelter outside the Campus Library. It gives smokers somewhere to go which is out of the wind, moves their smoke away from the library steps, and clears the road outside the library as well. The grass which has been damaged will of course be replaced.

Update - Library Digitised Documents & Keele Overseas Students

Keele has recently agreed to fund participation in a new CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) pilot scheme allowing delivery of Library-produced digitised documents to students based at an overseas campus.
This month the CLA launched a one-year pilot for the optional inclusion of overseas campus-based students (OCBS) under the terms of the current Higher Education Licence.
Any academic staff wishing to deliver digitisations to overseas students should notify the Digitisation Service staff at library.scanning@keele.ac.uk
Separate web links for overseas students will need to be prepared, as those links made for UK-based modules are not interchangable between 'home' and 'overseas' modules through Blackboard.
Please note the pilot is for academic year 2014-15 only - inclusion of OCBS beyond this date will be determined by the CLA/UUK and other stakeholders next year.

Dawson e-books - current lack of access

Unfortunately there is currently no access to our Dawsonera ebooks. The platform providers, Dawson, are having severe problems with their content and its delivery and they anticipate the full Dawsonera service to continue to be unavailable throughout the weekend.

They are working to restore access to the most frequently used titles in the first instance and then will progressively load additional titles based on accesses and year-to-date usage over the weekend. We'll try to keep you informed about progress as we hear from them.

Library gets Gold award for being green!

Green Impact is an initiative led by the National Union of Students to promote green practices and increase recycling in Universities.  The Library recently won the Gold Award in a competition that included 28 teams from across Keele University.

We know that green issues are important to students and the Library will continue to strive to minimise its environmental impact and to maximise recycling within the building.  One of the best ways that students can support this effort is to use the recycling bins correctly so that more rubbish can be directed away from landfill.

We look forward to engaging students even more next year to build upon the success of 2014.

Summer Lighting Project – may restrict access to some resources

Summer Lighting Project – may restrict access to some resources

The introduction of 24 hour opening and its popularity with students mean that electricity consumption in the Campus Library has increased significantly during the last two years.

We know that green issues are important to students so, in order to be more energy efficient, Estates will be upgrading the lighting in the Library between early June and mid-September.

We are undertaking this project during the summer (starting Monday 2 June) in order to minimise disruption to our users but, inevitably, there will be times when certain areas of stock won't be publicly accessible.

We will operate a stock retrieval service for these areas but you may need to allow 24 hours for your request to be retrieved. We will put out information about which class-marks are affected at which times on the Library website and Facebook pages and via the Library blog.

Thank you for your patience during this period. We think that the benefits in terms of improving our environmental sustainability are well worth it.

Leisure Reading - brought to you by Newcastle Public Library

We have often been asked about having more fiction for leisure reading at Campus Library but we do not want to spend Library funds for this purpose.

So...
we chatted with our local Public Library in Newcastle Under Lyme and we now have a Leisure Collection supplied by them within the Campus Library.  Although the books belong to Newcastle Library you can check them out on your Keele Card.

We hope this will be a popular addition for many of our members.

We'd recommend all students to become members of Newcastle Library.  As well as providing an alternative study space that may be convenient especially if you live off campus, there are some other leisure services that the local Public Library can offer you that Keele can't.

We'd particularly mention their i-Magazines service that enables you to download a wide range of popular magazines to your phone, iPad or other tablet .  What's more, you can join the Public Library at the Keele Campus Library service desk.

For more information please speak to a member of staff.

Need to use a Library closer to home?

Want to find out how you could access other Libraries beyond Keele? - find out about SCONUL Access
Go to http://www.keele.ac.uk/library/info/part/otherlibraries/sconul/

The SCONUL scheme provides Keele students access to resources of other libraries.  Over 170 higher education institutions in the UK and Ireland are members of the scheme.

Green Week Library promotion

Library Staff braved the weather today to demonstrate the amount of rubbish that is generated in the Library in 1 day.

It is one of the busiest buildings on campus so a lot of rubbish will be generated but, although much of it could be re-cycled; most of it actually goes to landfill.  Why?...

Quite simply because we are not disposing of our rubbish very considerately.  Designated re-cycling bins have the wrong items deposited in them so it ends up at landfill anyway.  General use bins are used for waste that could be re-cycled.

Our call for action is to use the bins more considerately so LESS rubbish can be sent to landfill.

Keele Research Repository and Catalogue Plus

This morning we launched another new feature in Catalogue Plus. Anything you put into the search box now searches across Keele's Research Repository as well as the Library Catalogue and most of our databases. The Research Repository aims to make Keele's scholarly research freely available.
When you've done a search you will see 'Keele Research' appear as an extra tab at the top left of the window and as an extra Collection in the column of facets on the left side, and you can of course click on the title to get more information. The technology isn't yet up to giving a direct link to the full text (although we're working on it), but it informs you of  the existence of the information which may be accessed using the link to the Research Repository on the bottom right corner of the screen.

Refworks Downtime 16 February 2014 03:00 to 11:00

Refworks have notified all users that there will be a system "downtime" for approximately 8 hours on Sunday 16 February 2014, between 03:00 and 11:00. This is due to the usual "essential maintenance".

Refworks also added in their communcation...

"During this time period RefWorks users can expect sporadic availability, including short periods of complete downtime. We anticipate that access issues and possible functionality problems will last anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes. If you experience issues with RefWorks during this maintenance window we recommend that you close your browser session, and return to RefWorks at a later time."

We're sorry if this inconveniences anyone.

For anyone with questions on this, please forward them to refworks.support@proquest.com.

Web of Knowledge ... now Web of Science - major upgrade (Jan 2014)

The service we knew as Web of Knowledge has changed its name - to Web of Science - as part of a recent service upgrade.

The Web of Science database itself is now called the "Web of Science Core Collection" and, don't forget, also includes the multi-disciplinary Book Citation Indexes and the Index Chemicus.

There are changes to the searching experience.  There's a simplified search screen for the databases and a prominent link for checking full-text availability ... click the Full-Text button to bring up @Keele, our e-journals checking service; this service checks for full-text availability through both Keele e-journal subscriptions and a range of major Open Access journal collections such as PubMed Central Open Access.

And finally ...
Don't forget, we also now have access to two additional databases to support your research: Current Contents Connect and the Data Citation Index.  For more Information view the "Web of Science" tab on this web page: http://www.keele.ac.uk/library/find/databases/

New feature in Catalogue Plus!

We've just enabled a new feature in Catalogue Plus which is now under testing. When you look at the full display for a book there is now a 'Find it' button on the right of the screen next to its location and shelfmark.

Click on this and you'll see a map of where it is in the library, which should make it easier for you to find it:

This feature works on most modern browsers, and for Catalogue Plus and the Classic Catalogue. We hope you find it helpful, and please let us know what you think of it.
